Where to Stay for the NYC Marathon: Manhattan, Brooklyn or Staten Island?
NYC Marathon runners travel to a Staten Island start but finish beside Central Park, so the best hotel is rarely closest to the start: Midtown West wins overall, Lower Manhattan favors ferry logistics, and Columbus Circle protects the exhausted walk after the finish.
1. The quick hotel decision
Best overall
Midtown West between Times Square, Bryant Park and Columbus Circle
Best for the finish
Columbus Circle, Upper West Side or southern Central Park
Best for ferry transport
Financial District near Whitehall Terminal
Usually avoid
Staten Island solely for start proximity
Do not book around an assumed transport assignment. NYRR's 2027 transportation times and selection process are not final. Recent operations use assigned Staten Island Ferry, Midtown bus and New Jersey bus options. Buy a flexible hotel and adjust only after NYRR confirms the runner's choice or assignment.

2. Midtown West: the safest overall choice
Midtown West is the default recommendation because it balances race-week tasks rather than winning only one moment. The Jacob K. Javits Convention Center has hosted the official expo and bib pickup. Bryant Park and the New York Public Library area have supported Midtown bus operations. Columbus Circle and Central Park West sit near the long post-finish exit. A hotel between these anchors usually keeps every transfer manageable.
ποΈ Times Square and Bryant Park
Properties such as the Westin New York at Times Square, Hyatt Centric Times Square, Arlo Midtown and numerous limited-service hotels create a large comparison set. The runner can walk or make a short subway trip to likely Midtown transport and the expo. Request a room away from elevators, street-facing nightlife and connecting doors; a central address has little value after poor sleep.
π Penn Station and Hudson Yards
This area is strongest for Javits Center access, Amtrak and commuter-rail arrivals. Hotels around 34th Street can be practical rather than romantic. Check the exact entrance: blocks feel longer with luggage, and the High Line does not replace a direct sidewalk route. The post-finish trip from Central Park is straightforward by subway or taxi after closures ease.
π Hell's Kitchen
Hell's Kitchen offers restaurants and a neighborhood feel west of Times Square. It can produce better rooms for the same price, but avenues become long east-west walks. Choose a property close enough to the relevant subway and avoid a room directly above late-night bars. Restaurant variety is useful for supporters; runners should reserve a familiar Saturday meal.
3. Columbus Circle and the Upper West Side
This is the finish-first choice. The marathon ends in Central Park, and runners then move through a controlled recovery route toward Central Park West and Family Reunion. A hotel around Columbus Circle or the West 50sβ70s can turn an exhausting post-race transfer into a walk. Supporters also gain easy access to the late course and reunion area.
Mandarin Oriental is the obvious luxury example; 6 Columbus, the Empire Hotel and Upper West Side properties provide other price points. Compare the actual walk from the runner exitβnot the finish lineβto the hotel entrance. Barriers may force a longer route, and some properties sit on the opposite side of Central Park West from the available crossing.
The trade-off is start transport. Midtown bus access may still be good, but a ferry-assigned runner must travel downtown before dawn. That is manageable by subway if the station route is simple and service is operating. Test it with luggage-free walking time and add a generous overnight-service margin.
Optimize the hardest journey. A rested runner can travel farther before dawn. A cold runner who has completed 26.2 miles benefits much more from a short, simple route after the finish.
4. Lower Manhattan for the Staten Island Ferry
Financial District hotels near Whitehall Terminal are ideal when ferry access is the priority. The runner can walk to the terminal rather than trusting an overnight subway. The Wall Street Hotel, Hilton Garden Inn Financial Center/Manhattan Downtown, Club Quarters World Trade Center and several chain options form a useful comparison set. Measure the path to Whitehall, not simply βdowntown.β
Lower Manhattan also works for airport connections and Brooklyn sightseeing, but the finish is far north. After exiting near Central Park West, the runner needs a subway or expensive taxi unless supporters carry gear and accompany them. Plan that trip before booking. A perfect ferry morning can still create a miserable evening if nobody owns the return.
Supporters based downtown can reach Brooklyn and Manhattan viewing by multiple lines. Weekend service changes matter. Do not pick a hotel because it appears near several colored lines; verify which station entrances have elevators and whether the relevant train runs directly at marathon hours.
5. Brooklyn: best for atmosphere, not runner logistics
π Downtown Brooklyn
Hotels such as the New York Marriott at the Brooklyn Bridge, Ace Hotel Brooklyn and EVEN Hotel Brooklyn place supporters near early course neighborhoods and major subway hubs. The runner still crosses to Manhattan for official start transport unless future guidance states otherwise. This adds a pre-dawn dependency.
ποΈ Williamsburg
Williamsburg offers food, nightlife and direct course atmosphere. It is better for supporters than runners because neither the start departure nor Central Park finish is nearby. Choose it when the marathon is part of a longer Brooklyn trip and the runner accepts the early journey.
A Brooklyn room can save money only when the full total is lower. Add late-night taxi risk, transit after the finish and the supporter group's movement. If the difference is $40 per night, Manhattan may be better value. If a refundable Brooklyn suite saves hundreds and gives everyone a real bed, it can win.
6. Queens, New Jersey and Staten Island
π’ Long Island City
LIC often combines newer hotels with fast Midtown subway access. It suits groups watching the Queens portion and travelers arriving at LaGuardia. Check late-night frequency and the exact station walk. A river-view hotel is irrelevant if the runner faces multiple transfers before official transport.
π New Jersey
Meadowlands-area official buses can make New Jersey logical for drivers or regional groups, but assignments change. Hoboken and Jersey City provide skyline views and PATH access yet introduce another system after the finish. Never assume PATH, ferry and subway schedules align perfectly on Sunday evening.
β΄οΈ Staten Island
Staying near the start sounds clever but solves only the first hours. Fort Wadsworth access is controlled, the expo is in Manhattan and the finish is across the city. Hotels are limited. Choose Staten Island only for local family, a specific authorized transport plan or a longer borough stayβnot as the general marathon hack.
7. Hotel questions that matter
Confirm the exact bed configuration. βSleeps fourβ may mean one king and a sofa; a runner should not share a pullout after months of training. Ask about refrigerators, kettles, early breakfast, blackout curtains, street noise and elevator reliability. Identify a nearby grocery or pharmacy and buy familiar food before Saturday evening.
Record the complete price after occupancy tax, destination fees, facility charges and parking. New York headline rates can hide a large checkout difference. Choose refundable terms until entry, transport and room counts are secure. Save the cancellation deadline with its time zone and assign one person to act several days early.
Book through Thursday or Friday to Monday at minimum. Sunday checkout before the race creates luggage and shower problems. International runners may prefer Wednesday or Thursday arrival for jet lag. If late checkout matters, buy it or obtain written confirmation; do not design recovery around a request the hotel may decline.
8. Match the hotel to each traveler
π Solo runner
Choose Midtown West for transport flexibility and food. Prioritize a quiet room, simple subway, refundable rate and Monday checkout over views or nightlife.
π₯ Runner plus supporters
Columbus Circle or the Upper West Side reduces reunion friction while supporters can reach multiple viewing areas. Agree who carries the runner's post-finish layer.
π΅ Budget group
Compare Long Island City, Downtown Brooklyn and Midtown limited-service hotels using the four-night total and real bed count. Keep every traveler close to one useful station.
βοΈ International package
NYRR says official tour operators may bundle guaranteed 2027 entry with hotel or flights. Verify the named hotel, entry entitlement, cancellation rules and room occupancy in writing.
9. Four-night hotel budget
These are planning allowances per person sharing a twin room for four nights, not live November 2027 quotes. Select one lodging line; do not add them together.
Midtown West
Best overall balance
$700β$1,800
Columbus Circle / Upper West Side
Finish-first convenience
$850β$2,200
Lower Manhattan
Ferry-first convenience
$650β$1,650
Brooklyn or Long Island City
Value with extra movement
$500β$1,350
Hotel planning range
Per person sharing; add $70β$180 for airport and local transport
$500β$2,200
π‘ Pro Tip: Compare the full refundable stay and real bed count. A cheaper room is not cheaper when it adds two taxis and gives the runner a sofa.
10. Booking timeline
Hold a flexible room when the group has a credible entry path, then confirm after NYRR publishes drawing, charity, tour-operator and transport details. NYRR's 2027 page currently says general drawing dates, charity partners and official international tour operators are still to be announced. Do not buy an unofficial bib transfer.
Three months out, finalize beds and deposits. One month out, map hotel to expo, hotel to assigned transport and finish exit to hotel. Race week, check MTA service and street restrictions. Give every supporter the reservation name, hotel address and backup reunion point.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best area to stay for the NYC Marathon?
Midtown West and the Columbus Circle area offer the strongest overall balance: official-transport access, Javits Center expo access and a manageable return from the Central Park finish.
Should runners stay on Staten Island?
Usually no. Staten Island is close to the start but separated from the expo, finish and most sightseeing. Official transportation from Manhattan is designed for runners and is normally the better system.
Is Lower Manhattan good for NYC Marathon runners?
Yes when the runner is assigned to or prefers the Staten Island Ferry. It provides an easy walk to Whitehall Terminal, but the post-finish return from Central Park is longer.
How many nights should runners book?
Four nights from Thursday or Friday through Monday is the practical core. It allows expo pickup before Sunday and avoids checking out before completing the race.
