Bairro Alto wins for variety and bar-hopping; Cais do Sodré wins for late finishes, transport and flatter streets. Chiado, sitting between them, is often the smartest group base. This former boarding-house concept is a good first Cais do Sodré stop because it feels distinctively Lisbon rather than like a generic club. The official schedule currently runs 17:00–03:00 Sunday to Wednesday and 17:00–04:00 Thursday to Saturday.
The current cocktail menu is mostly €10–€12. It is better for a deliberate drink and look around than for buying eight identical rounds.

Musicbox, beneath the arches at Rua Nova do Carvalho 24, is the programme-led late option. Nights can be electronic, live, Afro-Lusophone or alternative. Check the event first: a group that blindly expects commercial chart music may choose the wrong night, while a group matching the lineup can stay until close.
🚉 Why Cais works logistically
Cais do Sodré is a train, metro, tram, ferry and night-bus hub. That makes it the better late base for groups staying in Santos, Baixa, Estrela or farther west. It is also flatter than Bairro Alto, which matters more after midnight than the map suggests.
The winning route: do not choose between the two areas for the whole weekend. Start near Santa Catarina, use Bairro Alto from roughly 22:00, then walk downhill through Bica to one pre-agreed Cais do Sodré venue after midnight. Never reverse the route uphill at 03:00 unless the hotel is there.

🥇 Lower Chiado and Carmo: best all-rounder
Walk uphill to Bairro Alto, downhill to Cais and into Baixa for breakfast. Hotels tend to handle luggage and late access better than small historic apartments. The downside is price and busy tourist footfall.

This puts the group between the nightlife zones and near sunset viewpoints. Avoid rooms facing the Bica funicular street if silence matters, and remember that “200 metres away” can mean a punishing hill with luggage.
🌊 Santos: better value and breathing room
Santos has restaurants and bars of its own and sits west of Cais. It is a strong option for apartment groups wanting more space. You will use trams, buses or a short rideshare more often, but you avoid sleeping inside the main crowd.
🌙 Baixa: easiest mornings
Baixa is flatter, central and well connected. Stay toward Rossio or Restauradores for easy airport access, but confirm the walk home. It suits a mixed-energy group where not everybody wants every late night.

Carris lists night routes 201, 202 and 206 from Cais do Sodré toward different parts of the city. An on-board bus ticket costs €2.30 in 2026. Save the exact route and stop for the hotel; “take a night bus” is not a useful plan at 04:30 without the number.
