Edinburgh Hogmanay 2026/27: Street Party, Hotels and Travel Guide

Edinburgh’s Hogmanay Street Party takes over the city centre on 31 December 2026, so the key trip decision is where your group will sleep relative to its ticketed gates. A cheap room far outside the centre can become an expensive, awkward journey after midnight.

1. Quick facts

Event

Street Party, 31 December 2026 at 20:00

Where

Princes Street and central Edinburgh; use the gate on your actual ticket

Tickets

Official e-tickets; Street Party and Gardens are separate products

Airport

Edinburgh Airport tram or Airlink 100 to the centre

The official 2026/27 Street Party booking page confirms 31 December at 20:00 and lists £3.50 booking fee plus £0.50 charity donation in its ticket total. Dynamic ticket inventory and base prices can change. Buy through the official event links, keep each e-ticket available offline, and follow the gate and final access notice on that ticket.

2. Choose the right Hogmanay ticket

🎟️ Ticket first, hotel second

The Street Party is the broad outdoor celebration. The Concert in the Gardens, branded Hogmanay in the Gardens this year, is a separate ticketed event; a Street Party ticket does not admit you to it. The organiser also sells other events across the four-day programme. Decide whether your group wants the crowded street experience, a concert, an indoor ceilidh or a quieter restaurant booking before buying non-refundable rooms.

🚪 Read the entry rules together

The organiser says Street Party entry ends at 23:00, although gates may close earlier for safety and guests can be redirected. Re-entry is not permitted. The Street Party is 12+, and under-16s need an adult. Four 500 ml cans or plastic containers per person are the published alcohol limit; glass is prohibited. Save those rules with the tickets so one person does not delay the whole group.

A friend with a Gardens ticket and another with only Street Party access may not be able to meet inside. Put each person’s event and entrance gate in the shared plan, and name a meeting point outside the controlled area for after the event.

3. Where to stay for a practical walk home

🏨 New Town and St Andrew Square

A hotel around St Andrew Square, York Place or the eastern New Town is a strong default for a group entering from the east. You get restaurants and the airport tram near the hotel, but check the final event perimeter before assuming the nearest street is open. Look at room location on a map and compare the actual gate route, not a straight-line distance.

🏰 Old Town and Waverley

The Royal Mile, Cockburn Street and the Waverley area put sightseeing on your doorstep. They can also be noisy, hilly and difficult to reach by taxi when roads close. A room near the station is convenient for rail arrivals, but ask the hotel which entrance remains reachable with luggage on 31 December.

🚋 Haymarket and West End

Haymarket and the West End can offer better room value and direct airport connections. It may be sensible for a west-side ticket gate or for a group happy to walk after midnight. Budget extra walking time if barriers force a detour; do not plan a pickup on Princes Street.

🌊 Leith and farther out

Leith has dining and apartment options, but the post-midnight return depends on special public transport or an expensive car. It suits a group that values a separate neighborhood stay and can confirm late service. Edinburgh Park and airport-area hotels are usually a poor fit for a street-party night unless the group accepts a long return.

Reserve a refundable room while ticket and group numbers are still moving. Compare the whole three-night stay including breakfast, city charges, extra beds and cancellation terms; the cheapest headline nightly rate can lose after a late taxi or split-room mismatch.

4. Airport and city transport

✈️ Arrive via the airport tram

Edinburgh Airport’s tram goes through Haymarket, Princes Street and St Andrew Square, continuing toward Leith and Newhaven in normal service. Airport multi-day products include an airport return plus city-zone tram travel for three to five consecutive days. Check the 31 December service notice before using it as your late-night plan, because event crowd controls can change central stops.

🚆 Airlink and rail alternatives

Airlink 100 is the other straightforward airport-to-centre option. Waverley and Haymarket serve rail arrivals. If the group flies and trains in separately, choose a hotel rendezvous away from the event footprint; crowds and barriers make station forecourts poor meeting places at night.

Do not assume the tram, buses or a taxi will use their normal stop after midnight. Save the official Edinburgh Trams and Lothian alerts, walk the planned exit route in daylight, and nominate a second way home if service changes.

5. Three-day Hogmanay itinerary

🧭 30 December: arrive and orient

Check in, collect food and water, and walk from your hotel to the listed event gate while streets are still open. The Old Town and Grassmarket make a good first evening. Book dinner, because late December is busy; choose a restaurant close to your sleeping area if your group is arriving at different times.

🎆 31 December: keep the day light

Use the morning for Edinburgh Castle or the Royal Mile only if everyone wants the extra admission and walking. Eat a proper early dinner, put weather layers on, charge phones, download e-tickets and visit a toilet before entering. Travel to the assigned gate well before the last-entry cutoff, allowing for security and a redirected approach.

☕ 1 January: slow recovery

Do not put a prepaid early-morning tour on the calendar. A late brunch and a short walk around Calton Hill or the Water of Leith are more forgiving. The festival has historically offered First Footin’ cultural events on New Year’s Day; check the confirmed 2027 programme before promising a particular venue or performer.

Set a fixed departure and reunion rule. If the group becomes separated, messages may be slow in a crowd; a named café or hotel lobby outside the barrier is more useful than “meet near the Castle.”

6. What a three-night trip may cost

💷 Budget model

For a group of four sharing two twin rooms, reserve £210–£420 per person for three hotel nights, £30–£90 for the chosen event ticket, £105–£210 for food and drinks, £20–£45 for airport and local transport, and £35–£95 for sightseeing or contingency. That is £400–£860 per person before flights. These are planning ranges, not quoted 2026/27 hotel or ticket offers.

🧮 Where groups overspend

The main surprises are booking the wrong ticket type, late food, premium Old Town rooms, separate taxis after a split party, and paying for unused third beds. Put ticket, room deposit and transport commitments in one shared ledger and agree whether the group subsidizes the person who needs a quieter room.

A larger group can save on rooms but only if the sleeping layout is fair. Price actual beds and bathrooms, then split by room value rather than assuming one equal price fits a sofa bed and a private room.

7. Common mistakes to avoid

⚠️ Treating the whole festival as one ticket

Each advertised event has its own ticket, timing and conditions. The Street Party, Gardens concert and other indoor events are not interchangeable.

🧥 Ignoring the winter weather

The party is an outdoor, all-standing event in a Scottish winter. Wind and rain can change comfort and even operations. Wear waterproof layers and comfortable shoes; keep a flexible indoor backup for anyone who decides the street is too much.

🚫 Booking a drive through the centre

Road closures, one-way controls and crowds make “our taxi will find us” a weak plan. Use walking routes from the actual gate and decide in advance where a pickup could legally operate after the perimeter.

Accessibility needs should go to the organiser early. Accessible viewing places are limited; the official accessibility page identifies a dedicated east-side entrance and asks guests to contact its team.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Street Party free?

No. The official 2026/27 Street Party is ticketed. Buy from the organiser or its listed authorised sellers.

Does a Street Party ticket include the Gardens concert?

No. The Gardens concert is a separate product. Check each person’s ticket before finalising the group plan.

Can I leave and come back?

The organiser’s terms say there is no re-entry after leaving the event arena.

Where should we stay?

New Town or central Old Town works best for a walkable return, but choose the room only after checking the gate on your ticket and the final event access map.
